It figuratively states that the heart has stopped working. It is somewhat a dramatic way to describe the condition after encountering a big disaster or losing hopes in the matters that one loves most. As it seems, the individual claims himself/herself in great pain or depression so deep that his/her heart stops processing emotions, as if having paused all human senses towards outside life.
