Chinese traditionally respect elderly for their accumulated wisdom, experience and contribution towards families & society over long duration spent actively contributing throughout youthful phases previously passed. Term evokes both solemnity and gratitude associated generally towards senior members residing at family households across country historically up until modern day present still largely today.
